Stop search - know your rights

Asking individuals to account for their presence or behaviour is an important part of everyday policing. Stop and search (or stop searches) is an additional, legitimate and effective power used by police officers to protect our community, tackle crime and keep our streets safe. The majority of stop searches are conducted in areas experiencing higher levels of crime or anti-social issues. Officers are deployed to these areas to either respond to crime or target those responsible for it. Most are in relation to stolen property, illegal drugs, offensive weapons and items used to facilitate theft.
